ABOUT US
AFRO SASA BRASS is a brand that wishes to celebrate the adventurous spirit of cultural Heritage through our jewelry and accessories. Our designs are uniquely hand crafted. We also pride in empowering Artisans, especially women since they are the majority of our creatives.
Cowry/cowrie Shell Collection
Cowrie shells have always been highly valued by many cultures all over the world, and had multiple uses throughout the history. Like in Africa, up until the late 19th century, they were used as a form of currency(money). They were also made into jewelry, hair ornaments and they were also sewn onto prestigious garments. They were believed to attract abundance and success to the wearer and their tribe/community.
They were/are a sign of wealth, prosperity, strength, destiny, tranquility and calm.
They are timeless.

ABOUT THE MATERIALS WE USE
-
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION
Women and Men living in informal settlements see value in many things that we throw away. Brass metal, Cowrie Shells, Cow horns, bones and other waste materials. So, they are turned into attractive, functional fashion accessories. When you buy these products, you help create demand which fuels further collection, processing and utilization of waste material, thus safeguarding the environment.

COLOR VARIATION OF COW HORN JEWELRY
Every cow is unique from the other, and so are their horns. Some have dark horns, some are colourful, and others are almost see through. So as you are buying jewelry made of cow horn, kindly note that the colour variation could be a little different. Due to the nature of the natural material. This also means each pair is very unique, and no one will ever have a pair like yours. Ever.
-
HORN AND BONES
We do not promote or condone killing or poaching of animals! Our horn and bone is naturally sourced from deceased cows and we simply recreate them into beautiful jewelry.
More like a way to appreciate their existence and beauty, just like the cowrie shells from the ocean.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Material do we use?
Brass/Messing is the main material that we use in a majority of the pieces. Although, some pieces have other components like natural stones, cowrie shells, beads, Petrified wood, Cow horn, bones and even glass beads.
What is BRASS/Messing?
Brass is an alloy of Zinc and Copper. It has a warm and beautiful golden tone that looks almost identical to gold. Brass has been used for centuries in ancient cultures to create beautiful and decorative ornaments, as it is one of the hardest metals and super durable.
Brass is sustainable, and can be recycled over and still retain 80%+ of its value. The industry itself depends on recycled brass to survive.
Does Brass rust?
Since brass does not contain iron, it is non-rusting and anti-corrosive.
However, brass oxidises with time, and develops sort of a rich antique tone as it gets darker. A majority of the people leave it to gain the rich age appearance over time. But you can always regain its shine by polishing. Even after years of wearing.
How do I care for my brass jewelry?
Brass jewelry is very durable, easy to clean and will last for decades with proper care.
Always store your jewelry safely and away from direct sunlight and heat.
Remove your brass jewelry before swimming/showering, or partaking strenuous physical activities. Exposure to water can accelerate tarnishing. Avoid storing your pieces when they are wet. Storing your pieces individually in soft pouches can also help avoid scuffs and scratches as well.
Brass can also be slowly affected by the acid in some lotions. Pliz note, it does not rust. The oxidation and reaction only causes tarnish.
Good thing is, if you like your pieces flashy, you can always polish your jewellery to regain its shine. Even after years. Brass is Timeless.
Also, It is not a must for you to polish if you do not want. Some people prefer their pieces with the rich patina.
Remember, jewelry is the last thing you wear before you leave the house, and the first to remove as soon as you arrive back.
How do I polish my jewelry?
There are a number of ways to clean your jewelry using home ingredients, but it is more advisable to use brass polish for longer lasting results.
Using Brasso/Brass polish.
We do sell sample size Brass polish. However, you can also get Brasso metal polish on Amazon.
1. Shake the bottle container.
2.Apply a small/fair amount of the polish liquid to a dry piece of cloth.
3. Rub the now wet cloth on the brass jewelry gently and in circular motion for a few seconds.
4. When you are done with all sides of your jewelry, use a clean dry cotton cloth to now wipe off the polish from the jewelry.
It is that simple. and your jewelry is as good as new.
Note, don't be scared when the polish turns black as you rub. It's a normal reaction to the tarnish.
Using lemon and salt.
1. Get a lemon and salt.
2. Cut the lemon into 2 halves.
3. Then sprinkle some generous amount of salt on top of one half of the lemon.
4. Take your brass jewelry and rub it against the lemon and salt repeatedly. Until you're satisfied with the shine.
5. Then place it in a bowl of cold water for about 5 minutes.
6. Rinse it off well to remove the lemon juice.
7. Get a soft cotton cloth to pat it dry. Rub it well till completely dry.
If you find the process a bit messy as you use the lemon, there is also another way you can do it.
1. You can extract the lemon juice from the lemon.
2. Put salt in the extracted lemon juice.
3. Leave your jewelry for about 30 minutes.
4. Then rinse it off with cold water.
5. Dry it with a clean cotton cloth.
And that's it. You can continue rocking your now shiny piece/s of jewelry.
I actually find this process very satisfying and refreshing. I hope you do too.
